Over a period of time there have been many reported incidents, which show that using some crib linens may be very harmful to babies.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission already has proof of around 17 deaths of babies below 12 months due to suffocation that have been directly caused by crib linens.
This data has been gathered since 1984 and has helped to pinpoint that some crib linens have had something to do with these deaths. The CPSC staff are currently searching for a way to put a stop to these gruesome incidences, and they are carefully working on a more reliable way to improve the safety standards for crib linens.
It is expected that these new standards will soon materialize and buyers will be better informed when buying crib linens. Consumers need to make sure that their crib linens fit correctly with the mattress being used.
The CPSC is working together with some of the leading companies in the industry to determine a set of regulations for the manufacturing of safer crib linens.
Here are some points you need to be aware of when buying crib linens:
• The Crib linens need to be a good fit for the size of the crib and the mattress. As a responsible parent or carer, be sure to check that the linens are tucked properly under the mattresses in a way that they won’t be easily pulled out.
• Sheets to be used must fit the crib or bed in a sense that sheets made for adult beds should never be used with cribs because they are far too big and can trap the baby and may cause serious injuries.
• You must put your baby on a supine position, in well fitted crib linens that have passed the latest quality and safety standards.
• Over crowded cribs can also be very harmful. You should remove any unnecessary items from inside the crib such as large pillows, thick comforters, stuffed toys or other objects.
