There are many reasons why some people choose to make crib linens by them self. The most popular reason is the cost. It seems that wanting to have match bed settings could cost a lot of money, especially when you need more than one (for laundry days ect’…). There are few benefits to make your own bedding sets:

-        You can choose the exact fabric that you want to use.

-        You can make customized bedding sets for more than one bed (in case you have two kids in the same room).

-        Making the sheets by yourself is a real easy process. It doesn’t take much time to do, and you might even enjoy it.

Ok, if you can’t wait to start already, follow these instructions and make your first crib linens:

First Step:

The first thing you’ll need to do is to make some measurements, so keep your favorite measure tape handy.  The type of sheets we’ll make today can be suitable not only to cribs, but also to king size mattresses.

Second Step:

Ok, now we need to take exact measurements of the mattress. At this point, it will be smart to take a piece of paper to write on, just to keep track of the measurements. You need to take three measurements:

Long – you need to measure the mattress from the pillow side to the foot side (where the legs are), write down your first measure on a paper.

Width – Now measure the width of the mattress from one size to the other.

Depth – The last size is the depth of the mattress.

After writing down all three measurements, we can move to the next step.

Third Step:

It’s time to start handling the fabric; you’ll need to cut the fabric by the following measurements:

The length of the fabric needs to be as the length of the mattress plus twice the depth measurements. The same goes for the width. Here is a simple example:

If the length is 40 inches, width is 20 inches and depth is 8 inch, this will be the fabric measurements:

Length – 56 inches

Depth – 36 inches

I suggest adding another inch to the length and width that I just mentioned, just in order to allow a bit more sewing flexibility.

Forth Step:

Now we need to cut the fabric by the measurements we draw on it. I wouldn’t recommend using plain scissors to cut it; fabric cutter is much preferable. If you don’t have a fabric cutter handy, you can use scissors, just make sure they sharp enough.  When you cut the fabric make sure you also cut the corners of the fabric, so you should get something like a large rectangle with a square cut out of each one of the corners.

Now when we have the fabric cut in the right size and dimensions it is time to move to the next step, the sewing part.

-        The first thing you need to do now, is preparing the fabric to be sewed, the best way to do that is by  placing it on a table with the wrong side up, then pin the corners together. Once doing that, you’re ready to use a sewing machine to sew the edges, you can sew it by hand, but a sewing machine works allot faster and gives better results.

-        This is the time to take the elastic bands and pin them to the sheet’s corners. You need four bends (one for each corner of the sheets). Once they pined to the corners it is time the sew them to the edges of the sheets. This process needs to be repeated for each one of the corners.

You done! You just made by yourself crib linens! As I mentioned before, the same process can be used to create bigger linens, you just need to adjust your measurements.

I hope you enjoyed this post.
