Wool, is the name of fibres that we use mostly from sheep, it also grows on other animals such as the Alpacka’s. This is usually discarded by animals that grow it, usually once a year and is known as the summer malt. However man has learned to pre-empt the natural shedding of this useful material, and cut it off shortly before the animals natural shedding. Once cut it is usually called a Fleece, and this can be washed cleaned and made into yarns for making clothing, crib linen, and many other fabrics.
It is a complex protein, when compared to a man made fibre. And has evolved over millions of years to protect warm blooded animals from the many climatic conditions that are seen through the seasons and the varied climatic conditions around the world.
These natural fibres are very resilient and elastic in nature this means that individual strands can be bent and stretched a great number of times and still return to its natural state making it ideal for crib linen. It is also very good at absorbing moisture vapour while maintaining water resistant qualities. Because of its natural abilities it will absorb and hold dyes very well, making it a very colourable material.
The insulation qualities when used as linen have been proven over many centuries and because of its characteristics it helps keep us warm in the winter by keeping warm air in, and allowing moisture vapours (sweat) out; it helps to keep warm blooded creatures comfortable, so it is excellent for crib linen.
Woollen linen garments, as well as crib linen and normal bedding blankets etc tend to outlive man made fibres because of there elastic structure and also have the advantage of less wrinkling and sag. Wool also has many other uses such as insulation, absorbing spills, and also makes good mulch for the garden as it is bio-degradable. It has an R value of 3.5 per inch of thickness and is more environmentally-friendly.
Fleece has natural flame resistance, and will normally just smoulder or char even when even when exposed to an intense fire, it will usually extinguish itself. It is extensively used in crib linen. Also by the airline industry and is favoured by the U.S. military.
The Itch Factor, Some people experience what we commonly call itching and this occurs when the diameter of the wool is more than 30 microns across. This can be avoided by either blending with other linen materials or using wool from a different source such as Merino, or cashmere etc that are renowned for their comfortable feel next to the skin. There are also some blends such as Smartwool that is guaranteed not to itch and this is available now as crib linen.
Woollen or Worsted? Most wool we come across is made into yarns of either of the woollen or worsted types. In the woollen yarns, there is a combination of long and short fibres that are lying in different directions, so these linen fabrics on the whole are harsher to the touch, more rugged to look at, and warmer than worsteds. Worsted usually has longer fibres that lie in parallel with each other and are therefore smoother and stronger and so are better suited to crib linen.
